Unofficially a blog that's been shut down, you might still find the occasional post here where I mention something about exercise, rant/comment on life, or post my amateur third-person poetry.

School Woes and other bits

I've done a bit of running over the last couple of days, trying to squeeze some runs in before school starts properly. Most of the runs were for about 30 minutes, under the traditional pig pace of 8 minutes per mile. I'd like to think about doing my "50 runs/cardio sessions by Christmas" thing again, but my schedule has not panned out very favourably at all, and it seems unlikely I'll be able to do that. I'll have to leave for work at 6:30 most mornings (Saturdays too), and after school and private teaching, I'll finish work at 7:00 - never mind what time I get home. In addition, I'll be involved in Saturday school again this year. My daily lunch break has been whittled down to twenty minutes - it's usually over an hour, but we've had to schedule lessons in during lunch times - so lunchtime runs are out. On one of those school days, I'm teaching 10 lessons in the space of 8 - that gives you an idea of crammed the schedule is. Maybe I'll set my sights lower and aim for a long run every weekend? Or set the students a task at the start of the lesson and nip outside? Will it be pressups in the toilet, or pullups on the train again?

Oh, and my room at one school has been assigned to a newly-promoted deputy head to be her office. Tables in the corridor, anyone?

I've gotten into the habit of doing 200 pressups everyday - all the different variants: feet elevated, hands close-spaced, wide-spaced, knuckle, one-arm, normal etc. Most of the time I pick one and then do about twenty to thirty reps, and then move on to another variant immediately and crank out as many reps as possible, before choosing a third - by which time it's usually down to about five to eight miserable reps. I start the pressups from the "down" position - i.e. nose about 2" from the ground. Why? Because when I've done complete movements, up and down, and feel like resting (snout close to the floor), the muscle is in its contracted position and taxed, and I can rest as long as I want - although usually that uncomfortable position is only more motivation to crank out another rep, if only for the brief fleeting moment of relaxation at the top.

I did the same thing with bicep curls - starting with the weight from the top, curl, curl, curl for as many reps as possible, switch arms, curl, curl, curl, switch, repeat, repeat until satisfied. It goes against conventional wisdom, particularly starting at the top of the movement, but I find it really helps.

The other superset movements:
Leg raises/Squats - about 150-200 reps in total
Calf raises/Crunches - another 150-200

Today's run immediately followed all the pressups, curls, legs raises, calf raises and crunches, over 1000 reps. After 5 miles I think I was done for the day.

Until tomorrow.

So good to see you here in blogland!

Your vacation pictures are fantastic. Looks like you had fun!

Wow, and I thought I had a busy school day...since when do pigs get only 20 minutes for lunch? You must have to snarf that down fast! :)

Have a wonderful start to your school year!

that's insane - 10 lessons in the space of 8. What about lunch? And snack time?

Kenza has started to play the trombone. She she couldn't do something nice and pretty like a violin, nooooo - she picks a band nerd instrument. And she's very serious about it.

Any suggestions on how to build a soundproof room????
